The government has been urged to create job opportunities for thousands of people rendered jobless after the countrywide crackdown against illicit brews.

According to National Alcoholic Beverages Association of Kenya (Nabak) Central Rift Chapter, the crackdown was characterised  by misconception since both illegal and approved alcoholic brands were destroyed and bars closed.

"People employed by distributors, transporters, bars and wines and spirits shops have been rendered jobless. Many of them were breadwinners in their families," said Samuel Owino, a beer distributor.

Speaking in a Nakuru hotel on Saturday afternoon during a press conference, Owino said businessmen dealing in liquor have incurred losses close to Sh100 million.

"The directive to raid beer dens came from the government. We are encouraging the same government to compensate legitimate businesspeople whose property was destroyed. If there is no compensation, we shall move to court and sue the government," said Owino.

He said the government should come up with strategies to ensure those rendered jobless after the countrywide crackdown are employed in other sectors.
