Expectant mothers from the Gusii region have been urged to consider delivering in health facilities under skilled health care service providers to avert cases of fistula complications.
Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital acting CEO, Dr Enock Ondari linked increasing cases of fistula among mothers in the region to deliveries under the watch of unskilled health workers who are not trained to detect obstructed labour complications during deliveries.
Speaking on Wednesday at the hospital, Dr Ondari said majority of the fistula cases diagnosed in the region were attributed to mothers delivering under the care of unskilled service providers.
"I am reminding expectant mothers from this community to consider delivering in health facilities under skilled health care service providers to avoid complications which lead to fistula out of obstructed labour," said Ondari.
The medic asked members of the public not hesitate to seek medical attention at the facility whenever they come across a fistula case in their communities.
"This facility has two medics who can handle fistula corrective surgeries and whenever you spot a case on the same you should immediately seek medical attention from us,” said Dr Ondari.
Speaking at the same function Kisii County Health CeC, Sarah Omache cautioned residents against stigmatising women suffering from fistula.
"I am encouraging our people to come out and ensure all women suffering from fistula are assisted to seek corrective surgery at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital, instead of stigmatising and isolating them from the rest of the community," said Omache.
