Five hotels in Kikuyu town were Tuesday were closed down and their owners arrested over poor sanitation.
Speaking during the crackdown, deputy Public Health Officer in Kikuyu Alice Kinuthia said their aim is to ensure the eateries were safe for residents as they seek to prevent disease outbreaks.
She said some hotel owners in the area were ignorant of the requirements to operate such businesses and never cared about sanitation.
The officer said the five hotels did not have toilets and running taps for customers to wash their hands. Besides, they were not licensed and will remain closed.
Kinuthia said the five people who were arrested during the crackdown will be arraigned in court, adding that the crackdown will continue to ensure residents eat from hygienic places.
She said such hotels pose a threat to residents because most people, especially those working, preferred eating from them hence exposing them to health risks.
"The crackdown will not stop until we are certain that proper sanitation is observed. This should also sound as a warning to those who still operate without licences," said the public health officer.
