Unemployed youth in Githunguri have been challenged to take advantage of sport initiatives to make a living as well as contribute to development.

Speaking in her office on Thursday, the sub-county youth officer, Ms Lucy Nderitu said that more youth should engage in sports in the sub-county to contribute to the improvement of the region.

Nderitu stated that it was healthy to engage in sports as most activities involved running especially the ball games where participants remain fit and avoid being infected by lifestyle illnesses.

The youth officer urged youth to find out what their talents are and use them to better their lives.

"Many youth have found careers in sports where they get rewarded when they participate locally and internationally hence creating job opportunities. They also get the adventure of a life time as they travel thus improving their living standards because of the exposure they got while sporting," said Nderitu.

She said the weather in Githunguri favoured sporting, and urged the youth to fully exploit the opportunity and try out various fields to help them figure out what they can do best.

Nderitu said engaging in sports will enable the youth avoid taking part in criminal activities like stealing, drinking, or other forms of crime that would land them on the wrong side of the law.

Austin Kamau a resident, said that he was proud of being a member of the Star football team because they go for matches within Kenya and in other countries where they get paid allowances that sustain him and his family.

He said more unemployed youth should come together and form sport clubs involving various games to help them be engaged in activities that will give them success as they grow in the society.
