Members of the provincial administration in Nyamira County have been warned against colluding with illicit brewers.

Nyamira County Commissioner Ms Josephine Onung’a said any officer found encouraging trade in illicit brew will lose their job.

She was addressing members of the provincial administration and Administration Police officers on Wednesday in Nyamira town.

“There are some officers who solicit for bribes from brewers in their areas of jurisdiction and allow them to continue with the business. Whoever is doing that is only doing disfavour to himself or herself because they will lose their jobs,” warned Onung’a.

However, she said some of the officers have been in the fore front in the fight against the vice noting they have impounded thousands of litres of illicit brew. She noted Masaba North and Borabu districts were leading in making and consumption of chang’aa and other hard liquor.

“We have impounded 8000 litres of raw chang’aa famously known as kangara and more that 300 litres of chang’aa in the whole county for the last two weeks. Masaba North and Borabu sub-counties were the leading in the illegal business,” she noted.

She said the raid will go on across the county and urged those engaged in the business to desist and find other businesses that can generate income for them.

This comes two weeks after President Uhuru Kenyatta gave a directive of destroying illicit brews.

The president warned county commissioners and their juniors against recklessness in the war against illicit brews. He said whoever was condoning the brewers put their jobs in jeopardy, remarks that were supported by Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaisery who has since fired about 100 chiefs and their assistants, 5 OCPDS and 7 OCSs who were found sleeping on their jobs.
