Residents of Ombeyi Ward in Muhoroni constituency are now appealing for humanitarian help following the heavy rains on Friday night.

Through their ward representative Joshua Auko, the residents said the heavy rain that was coupled with heavy winds and hailstones left a trail of destruction.

Mr Auko said 15 houses were destroyed and another ten had their rooftops blown off.

He said hailstones destroyed rice paddies that were due for harvest in two weeks noting that the locals were now staring at hunger.

“Farmers' hope of a bumper harvest has been washed away. The area will suffer food shortage since most food crops that were in the farm have been destroyed,” he said.

Addressing a press conference in Kisumu on Saturday, Auko called on the county government of Kisumu to respond to the immediate needs of those who were affected by the flash floods.

He further urged other humanitarian organisations like the Kenya Red Cross Society to move to the ground and carry out an assessment of the damage and possible response to the victims.

Mr Auko said the county special programmes had allocated funds to mitigate the effects of El Nino in the county.

“I am happy that the county had budgeted Sh70 million to mitigate the effects of El Nino, these funds should now be rolled out to reach out to the affected families,” he said.

He told his people to heed calls from the metrological department and move to higher grounds to avert loss of lives and property.
