Mwiki Motor Repairs and Maintenance Welfare Group Chairman Edward Mburu has raised concerns over garage owners employing dubious motor mechanical attendants.

Speaking on Friday in Mwiki during a roads safety and garage management workshop, the chairman said some local motor repairs and maintenance garages were operating without licenses from the government and were actively providing poor services that contribute to road accidents.

He urged the National Transport Roads Safety Authority officials and the Kiambu County government’s Department of Transport to carry out investigations that will lead to a crackdown on illegal and dubious motor vehicles repairs and maintenance businesses in the county.

“Some people are running illegal motor vehicles repairs and maintenance businesses that offer very poor services. This has contributed to many road accidents in our roads and also genuine mechanics being blamed of being unqualified,” said Mburu.

Mburu further claimed that the illegal motor vehicle garages that employ unqualified staff also collude with carjackers and other illegal spare parts dealers and are involved in automotive related crimes.

Michael Waweru, a member of the group said that the fake mechanics are the ones to blame for some of the accidents because they do not fix the vehicles properly.

He said this leads to some vehicles having technical problems in the roads thus causing accidents.

Moses Kariuki, a mechanic, said that the concerned authorities should take actions against the fake mechanics.
