Kikuyu traffic police have warned motorists against operating vehicles unfit for use on the road saying they are a major contributor to accidents and congestion.

This follows a traffic crackdown on Thursday along the Kikuyu-Nairobi route led by Inspector Elizabeth Wakuloba where 12 drivers were arrested. She mentioned that those arrested would be arraigned in court and the vehicles towed to the police station.

She noted that Public Service Vehicles (PSV) operators formed the majority of offenders adding that some of the drivers lacked the required licenses.

“Driving such kind of vehicles is a serious crime as they pose a threat to people’s lives,” she stressed.

Inspector Wakuloba said motorists operating unroadworthy vehicles are reckless and when involved in accidents they run since they recognise they are at fault.

She revealed that the crackdown would continue in the region to ensure drivers adhere to traffic rules and rid the route of unroadworthy vehicles.

"We are going to continue with this operation to ensure that vehicles using the road do not risk people's lives. I warn those who are breaking this law to cease as they will soon be brought to book," said Inspector Wakuloba.

Edwin Maina, a driver along the route said that if the operation continued the road would be safer. He however observed that some motorists had devised ways of evading the police.

“There are some alternative routes which can be used and others wait until the operation is over and resume business,” Maina said.
