Uasin Gishu County Assembly Majority Leader Josphat Lowoi has rubbished the opposition’s move to create a pay bill number to collect money to help the striking teachers.

On Friday, Lowoi said move is part of Cord’s scheme to siphon funds from the public.

Speaking at the county assembly, the speaker said the opposition is trying to remain relevant since it cannot raise such an amount.

He added that it is the mandate of the Teachers Service Commission and the government to implement the salary increment.

"The opposition leaders led by Raila Odinga are not realistic and their plan is ill- intentioned. If the government cannot afford to pay teachers the court-awarded increment, where will the poor mwananchi get money to donate on the same? Cord leaders should tell the public the intention of coming up with the solidarity fund is to source money to finance their campaigns come 2017," Lowoi said.

He said the mandate to implement the pay increase is vested in the TSC as the teachers’ employer and the national Treasury.

The actions by the opposition are to us the kicks of a dying horse, he added.

"The President (Uhuru Kenyatta) said the government does not have money to pay teachers, and that the increment will translate into high wage bill. I urge the opposition not to incite teachers. It should also withdraw the pay bill number since it won’t help teachers as it will be used by a few self-centered individuals” he added.

This comes after Cord leaders on Wednesday announced a pay bill number that could be used by Kenyans to send money of whatever amount which they will use to help the striking teachers.
