University and colleges graduates from Nyamira County could get paid internship at various departments within the county government if a bill sponsored by Gesima MCA is adopted.

Ken Atuti, a former lecturer at Kisii University tabled the bill at the county assembly on Thursday for its first reading. The bill could help hundreds of youth from the region who remains jobless despite having graduated from various colleges.

Speaking HiviSasa on phone, Atuti said freshly graduated residents will be paid up to Sh25,000 per month while awaiting for a job opportunity to arise in the respective department for permanent absorption, if the bill is passed.

He however said the beneficiaries will be those who managed to graduate from higher learning institutions with exceptional grades.

“This will help our brilliant minds who haven’t been able to get permanent jobs at both private and public sectors. I know the numbers could be high that is why I am specific that only those with exemplary qualifications. They will be paid up to Sh25,000 depending the job description,” he said.

He said he was optimistic that the bill will be adopted into law saying several MCAs had added input into the draft. He says he would welcome any amendment to make it more favourable to would-be beneficiaries.

“It will be a motivation to our students to be innovative and creative. They will have to work hard to excel and many of my colleagues have given their input making me optimistic that it will be supported,” he said.

This is the second time a similar bill is being introduced to the house after the initial draft was rejected by the education committee citing inconsistencies.
