Milk vendors in Kisii town were on Wednesday arrested by officers from the Kenya Dairy Board for not following up with the standards of the regulations set by the board.
The Kenya Dairy Board Nyanza branch director Mr. David Akungu who led the operation of finding the milk vendors said that the farmers were found selling the milk in unsanitary locations.
“These people were selling the milk under insanitary conditions for example by the roadsides and some were even doing it in back streets. They were also carrying the milk in plastic containers which easily contaminates milk. Some of the milk that we tested had water and powder substances in them,” he said.
The milk vendorss were later on taken to the Kisii Law Courts and were charged with selling milk under unhygienic conditions and not meeting up to the standards set to regulate the selling of milk to the public.
Akungu additionally said that the crackdown on the milk vendors will still continue to ensure that the levels of hygiene are up to standard.
