Residents of Mununga and Kangaita villages in Chania Ward, Gatundu North Constituency are counting losses due destruction of crops by monkeys along River Chania.
The colobus monkey's, locally known as 'theru', residents say have turned them into food beggars having destroyed alarge amount of their food crops.
The area is rich in bananas, avocados, maize, sweet potatoes, arrow roots among others. Over the years, residents say the growing population of monkeys has increased competition between them for the food they grow.
"There should be a way of reducing their population. Can't they be moved to a park? They are very many and aren't sparing anything edible," said Leah Wambui.
Wambui said that if the situation continues there could be massive food shortage in the area.
"We have tried to prevent them from accessing our farms, but its not going well," she laments.
Residents add that the monkeys have not been sparing the cash crops either.
"We are coffee and macadamia farmers but the monkeys don't spare them especially when they are ripe. Something must be don," Mugachi Mwangi said.
They now want their elected leaders to visit the area and address their plight immediately.
