Kenya Power is set to introduce new substations to increase power supplies to customers in Western Kenya region.

Speaking to the press on Friday at Kisumu hotel, the company’s Regional Manager Rosemary Odour said that substations will be launched in Awendo and Sori to boost power supply.

"Awendo substation will supply power to customers in Homabay and Ndhiwa. The Sori substation being at the border will supply both Homabay and Migori counties," said Oduor.

She added that a substation is being set up in Luanda to serve residents of Maseno area.

"Plans are underway to build more at Katito for Kisumu county, Lukuyani for Kakamega county and Port Victoria in Busia County," she said.

Oduor urged residents in slum areas to take advantage of the slum electrification program fund. She said that the project is an initiative of the World Bank and Kenya Power to supply electricity to slums across the country.

"over 27,000 households in 33 slums in Kenya have benefited from the project including Manyatta and Nyalenda slums. The customer only has to pay S1,to get connected," said Odour.

She added that the company has rolled out the last mile project to increase power access up to 70 percent.

"Right now we have 40,000 transformers in Kenya, with 8500 in Western Kenya. We supply electricity to 3.1 Million customers. We are targeting 470,000 additional customers," she added.
