Juja MP Francis Waititu has refuted yesterday’s claims by Governor William Kabogo that four people have died in Kiambu County after suffering from alcohol withdrawal syndrome.
The legislator dismissed the allegations as just politicking around the issue.
“These people are just after earning praises from the people that they are fighting the brewing in the county. No one has died and I am sure even the ones that are suffering are those who were addicted. They should be rehabilitated immediately,” Munyua said.
Gladys Chania who has been in the frontline in the fight against drug abuse among the youths in Kiambu County has said that she is not aware of any deaths. She, however, admitted that several people are suffering from the withdrawal symptoms.
In a phone interview on Friday morning, the two said that alcoholism should be fought by rehabilitation and not giving room for deaths.
“We need to get together and fight the alcoholism challenge. We shouldn’t let anyone die in the course of fighting it. We are preventing deaths and not encouraging them,” Chania said.
On Thursday, Governor Kabogo said that four people had succumbed to the symptoms. This was hot on the heels of a revelation by county health CeC Jonah Mwangi that the county had set up 13 rehabilitation centres.
