The acting Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Cabinet Secretary (CS) Adan Mohammed has urged farmers in Nakuru to step up their farming to address the food insecurity in the country.
Speaking on Thursday at David Langat Farm in Elbugon, Nakuru County during a one day farmers' training, Mohammed said his ministry has committed to support Nakuru County in its quest to increase food production.
“The government has rolled out plans to help Nakuru County to improve food production,” said Mohammed.
Mohammed noted that the county has been in front line in food production adding there is need for farmers to be supported.
“Nakuru has been one of the bread basket of the country and the national government will continue supporting it to achieve better food production,” said Mohammed.
Mohammed said that he has been impressed by the development of agriculture in the county that has led to better yields in the past years.
The CS urged the county government to involve all agricultural players in attracting investors who will provide farmers with inputs at subsided prices.
“Farmers need more investors who will work with them in the provision of several farm inputs at low costs,” said Mohammed.
Nakuru County Chief Officer for Agriculture, Purity Muritu revealed that agriculture in the county has taken a new direction following the launch of a Sh4.5 billion development plan.
“The county government of Nakuru has committed itself by helping farmers with the launch of a Sh4.5 billion development plan,” said Muritu.
Over 500 farmers from Elburgon and neighbouring areas attended the training and learned farming practices like erosion control, weed control, soil conservation and crop rotations among others.
