Students taking science courses at Kisii University have a reason to smile after the institution commissioned a 400 capacity science block for their lessons.

In the past, the institution has been partnering with Gusii Institute of Technology to conduct practical lessons, a move the students disliked owing to the distance covered to access the services.

On Monday, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) Prof Maurice Amutabi said the completion of the complex would save up to Sh5 million per month the institution has been spending to access services at Gusii institute.

“I am very happy that we have completed the block in time. The population of students taking science courses has grown substantially and that is why we had to go for the new facility. This will further help us to save over Sh5 million that we have been spending every month to access services at Gusii Institute,” he said.

Amutabi said plans are in place to build another science block that will host the school of pure mathematics and sciences estimated to cost about Sh100 million.

“This is not the end of the road. We want to produce quality graduates and this can be done by building another block that is set to cost at least Sh100 million. The Senate has approved the project and will commence soon,” the don said.

Students lauded the management for the new building but challenged it to equip the room with more facilities.

“Having the space is important but having facilities is fantastic. We want to see more science facilities,” said Justus Ogot, a pure sciences student.
