Police in Thika Town arrested eight bar attendants and their 11 patrons on Wednesday in a raid on bars operating illegally.
During the raid, police destroyed over 4,000 litres of wines and spirits and said the suspects are set to be arraigned in court on Thursday.
Among the raided outlets is the Fulilia Hotel which operates both a hotel and bar as well as a host of other pubs along the Uhuru street where they confiscated cartons of suspected illegal alcohol drinks and apprehended the bar attendants.
Thika west District Administration Police Commander (DAPC) Samuel Ombonya and area OCPD Erastus Muthamia led the area chiefs and his assistants in the raids after the were tipped off by community policing officers.
Residents say operation ‘maliza pombe haramu’ launched in the area by Thika MP Alice Ng’ang’a has seen sale of second-generation spirits reduce in the area.
Residents been called upon to continue informing the police of anyone still selling or hoarding illegal alcohol.
