The National Transport and Safety Authority on Thursday impounded 25 public service vehicles in Ruiru and Juja towns for failing to comply with road safety rules.
The crackdown was occasioned by an accident on Thika Road just after Juja town in which 12 people died.
NTSA officers led by Deputy Director Cosmas Ngeso said Thika Road has the highest number of vehicles that do not comply with traffic rules.
He noted that most of them do not have speed governors and also don’t belong to a sacco.
“Most vehicles are operating without a NTSA licence. Others neither have speed governors nor belong to a sacco. The procedure is very clear that if you want to be in the public transport business, you must comply with requirements first,” he said.
He also called on the public to stop using Proboxes as PSVs.
He also advised school management to ensure that school buses meet road safety rules.
“There is still concern on Proboxes and other saloon cars that operate as PSVs illegally. I urge the public not to use them,” said Ngeso.
