The county government of Nyamira has been urged to give area residents first priority when awarding tenders in the region.

Speaking at Guardian Hotel during a breakfast meeting on Monday, Nyamira Youth Senate Chairman Jason Mogire claimed that non-residents were being given 'executive treatment' in award of the contracts.

“Our constituents are treated as second class citizens in tendering. Most contracts are awarded to non-residents and we are ready to prove that if need be,” Mogire said.

He said that while they were not against 'outsiders' being given the contracts, locals should also be considered.

He challenged the ministry of youths to prove that 30 per cent of the tenders had been awarded to youths, women and persons living with disabilities as stipulated in the constitution following accusations that the contracts had been given to people who don't qualify.

“We also want to see the list of youths who have benefited from the tenders. Our group has already written to them and we are waiting for answers,” he added.

They threatened to take unspecified action if the county government does not address the matter.

“It’s clear there is a disparity and the governor has to come out clear on this,” Mogire said.
