Over 500 bars have been closed down in Uasin Gishu since the crackdown on second generation alcoholic drinks started two weeks ago.

The County’s director of Alcoholics Drinks Control Board (ADCB) Armstrong Rono said most closed bars and pubs were operating within Eldoret town.

Speaking to journalists at Eldoret town on Tuesday, Rono said that fight against illegal alcoholic drinks would continue until all illicit alcohol was destroyed and culprits prosecuted.

“We have partnered with the county government and other agencies working in the county to get rid of illegal alcoholic drinks,” he said.

The director further said that licenses revoked from rogue operators would not be re-issued advising those with unauthenticated documents to close shop.

“We will conduct a fresh audit to ascertain the authenticity of documents by operators who are still in the market,” he added.

He said that they are working with Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) officials to evaluate the products being sold by operators who have been given the nod to continue with the business.

At the same time, the officials asked operators who have licenses and are still operating near schools, churches and hospitals to immediately vacate.

“There is no going back in the fight against illegal alcoholic drinks, we started the fight and we will finish it,” he added.

County Commissioner Mohammed Abdi said that the crackdown was being extended to remote areas.

In an earlier press briefing at his office, the County Commissioner said that chiefs in remote areas where local brew is rampant have been directed to comply with the directive.

“We will not spare any untested drink, even busaa,” he stressed.

The commissioner however cautioned the police and members of the public against destroying property.
