Kisii County Community Clinical Officer Kepha King’oina has asked parents and guardians to avail their children to be vaccinated against polio.

The two-day nationwide vaccination programme scheduled to begin on Saturday has been organised by the Ministry of Health and targets children aged five years and below.

Speaking on Thursday to Hivisasa at Kisii Nyanchwa area during a normal routine, King’oina said the vaccine was safe.

Earlier this week, the Catholic Church had called for a boycott after it raised concerns over the safety of the vaccine.

“I encourage parents to allow their children to be vaccinated against polio since it is good for their children's well-being,” said health official.

“We face many challenges during such campaigns as some parents decide to close their doors when we visit their houses. They should know that this programme is meant to help their children's well-being,” added King’oina.

Last year, some parents in the county declined to take their children for vaccination saying it was not safe.
