Cord Principal Raila Odinga has said the tremendous steps made by the country in terms of economic empowerment and democratisation of institutions are fruits of academic intellectuals.

Speaking on Monday at Kisii University during a public lecture by a renowned literary writer Prof Ngugi Wa Thiong’o, Odinga said the academicians have remained committed to see the nation progressing in terms of economy and growth of democracy space.

He hailed personal contributions of Thiong’o who was exiled for over 20 years due to his criticism of previous regimes.

“Kenya would not be what it is today if these scholars kept quiet and let the regimes execute their dictatorship on the people. They have imparted knowledge on our children and continued to give constructive criticism for good governance,” said Odinga.

He added: “I bet Prof Ngugi, Wangari Maathai and many more have been on the front line in achieving the course.”

Raila urged Kenyans to honour the living legends by giving them optimum respect given their global recognition.

“Some of these scholars are known globally and when they come to the country, we give them a wide berth. Time has come to honor them,” he said.

He urged the government to resolve the standstill with teachers by paying them to avert the looming strike as school open.

“Teachers of this country have fought hard and have been rewarded by the court. Teachers Service Commission (TSC) should ensure they are paid to avoid unnecessary strikes,” he added.
