Leaders from Mombasa County have urged residents to work with security agencies in the ongoing crackdown on drugs and dealers at the coast.
Mvita MP Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir said they will work with the residents to provide information and help in identifying drug dealers.
"The residents know where the dealers are operating from and they will help to wipe out drug and substance abuse and trafficking in the coastal region. We will mobilise the area residents to give information to the special security team formed to lead the crackdown on drugs,” he said.
He added, “The operation will start at the Old Town and Majengo before we move to other areas in the county.”
The MP was speaking at Fort Jesus on Saturday where he was accompanied by County Commissioner Nelson Marwa and Nyali MP Awiti Boro.
Awiti called on all leaders from the Coast region to support the president’s initiative against drugs.
Awiti said the drug menace in his constituency has reached alarming levels with increased availability of hard drugs that has affected many youths in the region.
“In my constituency, there are daylight markets where drugs are sold at Uwanja wa Mbuzi, Mkomani, Ziwa la Ng’ombe and other areas. We are supporting this initiative by the President to eliminate drugs in the region. We want the lives of our youths to be saved from drugs,” said Awiti.
President Uhuru Kenyatta had last week directed an immediate crackdown on drug dealers and their dens to be eliminated in the region.
