Scrap metal dealers in Kikuyu have been cautioned against engaging children in the trade since it hinders their education.

Speaking on Thursday in her office, Kikuyu children’s officer Ms Harriet Kihara said that children are being lured into the venture by the thought of making money.

"Children risk the danger of contracting diseases such as cholera which is rampant in the country because of engaging in the business of collecting scrap metal and bottles for sell," said Kihara.

The officer further noted that the children risk being raped by sexual predators or being hurt by broken bottles, nails and syringes.

She said the government has set up policies to protect children by crafting legislations to tame the scrap metal business which including a clause requiring dealers to obtain a license before running the business.

Kihara added that it is criminal to include children in the trade and anyone found doing so will face the law.

She cautioned parents against supporting the idea of child labour because of social issues like poverty noting that the only way to help children escape poverty is through education.
