There was a somber mood in Seiyot Secondary School in Eldoret on Friday evening after a fatal incident where one student was pronounced dead and seven others hospitalized after taking methanol from the school laboratory.

The students who were all form fours are said to have taken advantage of the fact that their teachers were not within the school compound and decided to get into the Friday mood by taking methanol in a bid to get drunk. However it did not go very well as they anticipated, shortly after consuming the methanol they started vomiting severely before they were rushed to Moi teaching and Referral Hospital where one student later succumbed to the damages caused by the methanol.

Eldoret West deputy OCPD, Tom Achia has condemned the incident and termed it as unfortunate.

“It is so unfortunate of what is happening in our Kenyan secondary schools. I condemn this incident in the strongest terms possible and urge students to be more careful with what they do to avoid incidents such as these ones” He said.

He however said that the matter is under investigations and they will respond to it fully once they are done with investigations. This comes days after other 37 students were arrested in Nyeri County after they were caught by police abusing drugs.
