Police in Kisii are holding a vehicle suspected to have been carrying drugs stolen from government medical facilities.
The private vehicle, a Mazda Premacy model, was nabbed at Nyamataro on Tuesday after being trailed since Saturday on suspicion of dealing with stolen government drugs.
Confirming the incident Kisii–Kisumu highway Patrol Police Commander David Keter said the occupants of the vehicle managed to escape and the vehicle is being held at Kisii Central Police Station.
He said the vehicle carried a variety of drugs of unknown value and that it also included surgical gloves and sterilisers whose destination remains unknown.
A Doctor from Kisii Level Six Hospital, Frankline Ondabu who was called by the police to identify the drugs confirmed that the drugs were indeed government medical utilities sourced from government drug stores as labeled on the cartons that bore the consignment.
Ondabu said the drugs are assumed to have been stolen unless any documents to verify any official transfer are availed to the police.
This comes as many residents from both Kisii and Kisumu counties decry lack of drugs in public health facilities. They say that in public hospitals, they were only diagnosed and advised to buy medicine from private pharmacies.
