Youths from Rigoma ward, Kitutu Masaba constituency are engaging in prohibited drug abuse and trafficking, a section of area women have claimed.
The women led by Beatrice Machama said many youths have abandoned their homes to join unscrupulous businessmen dealing with illegal drugs, with bhang being on top of the list.
They said the young generation was becoming a bad influence and questioned authorities for failing to take up steps to combat rampant cases in the region.
“As good parents, when something goes wrong, we have an obligation to report. A number of youths in the region are engaging in drug trafficking and that is a major concern. My two sons are rarely found in the house and I have reported the matter to the authorities. The government should chip in and help us combat the crime,” Ms Mochama said.
According to them, drug trafficking business in the region is affecting the region's economy since most youths are allegedly abusing illegal drugs, making them become ‘impotent’ in positively transforming the economy.
“The cases are rampant and work has literally stalled. Many of the old aged people are going through difficulties and this is something we ought to report to get urgent help. The cases are no longer in towns as the authorities think. The menace is now with us in the villages,” she added.
Area MCA Ben Sironga who was preparing Rigoma grounds ahead of Friday’s World Food Celebrations admitted the rampant drug trafficking incidents and said he had reported to the county commissioner office.
“It is true because a number of parents have reported the cases to me. As their representative, I took the matter to Nyamira County Commissioner's office and I am waiting for a feedback. However, I am planning a major rehabilitation for victims and the program will start soon,” Mr Sironga said.
