Tea farmers in Nyamira South Sub-County set to enjoy tea bonuses are a happy lot despite a few ripples expected in the tea growing zone.
Many married women from the area feel the amount may not help some of them based on the past trends where their men abandoned their families to allegedly 'hang out' and squander the money with young girls.
Previous reports have indicated an influx of girls in Nyamira and Kisii towns speculatively targeting men during tea bonuses payments.
According to Irene Nyan’guono, a tea grower and a mother of five children, many men vacate their homes after getting the bonus cash to enjoy themselves with young girls who come as far as from beyond Nyamira and Kisii County.
"Many men desert their homes and do not want to be asked to account for every shilling they got as a bonus. Some married women fear their men will misuse tea earnings," she says.
Her sentiments have been echoed by Evans Raini a tea farmer from the same area who says that tea farming is still quite a paying venture.
He however, points out that the youth have been reluctant in farming the crop due to indulgence in consumption of alcohol.
However leaders from the area have been cautioning area residents from misusing the tea bonus and called upon them to invest wisely.
