Kisii University students have been urged to use the Healthcare Assistance Kenya toll-free helpline 1195 to report cases of gender violence.

The university's Director in charge of the Gender and Development Studies department Dr Caren Nyambane encouraged the students to use the helpline in case they feared using the university helpline.

Speaking on Wednesday at the university, a day after the world celebrated the International Peace Day, Dr Nyambane said through the helpline, the students will be able to report cases of violence that are on the rise in Kisii.

"I encourage our students to make use of HAK's toll free helpline 1195," she said.

"This will ensure they get assistance on gender based violence cases within and outside the university if they feel the one within the university will not address their problem."

She said the university will partner with organisations that champion the fight against gender based violence in the county.

Dr Nyambane said the university will also support the education of girls because of their vulnerability to violence and neglect.

Peace Initiative Kenya, a project of the International Rescue Committee Programmes Officer in charge of gender issues Ruth Oywaya encouraged the students to report cases of violence whenever they occur.

This year's International Peace Day was organised by the Peace Initiative Kenya and supported by the county government of Kisii.
