Police in Kisii have arrested two men believed to have incited peaceful demonstrators in engaging the security officers during a demonstration that aimed at urging the government to spearhead efforts to release a local businessman currently held by Tanzanian authorities.

Businessman Don Bosco Gichana was arrested by Tanzanian police over two years ago following an arrest warrant by the US over alleged money laundering and fraud and is yet to be extradited to USA to face trial.

However, the Wednesday demonstration in his support turned chaotic after a section of youths started pelting stones to security officers who were in their routinely patrols in the town.

“I can confirm that we two youths are in police custody and will be arraigned in court on Thursday for engaging the police officers in a running battle. The officers were in their normal patrol and the youths started it all disrupting what we thought was a peaceful demo,” said OCPD Solomon Kiragu.

Mr Kiragu called for the conveners of the demonstration to surrender to the authorities before they are apprehended to join the two youths.

“They injured an office and we were lucky to arrest them. I want to urge those who organised the whole thing to surrender before we catch up with them,” he added.

The demonstration which paralysed activities in Kisii town lasted for several hours before it was quelled by the police officers.
