Hundreds of unroadworthy motorbikes were yesterday nabbed in Rongai after a crackdown on unscrupulous bodaboda operators was mounted at different spots across the sub-county.
Rongai OCPD Joseph Mwamburi, who led the operation, noted that the operators who were nabbed had motorcycles that failed to pass the minimum conditions of operation.
“Notwithstanding the driver, the bike itself must be in an operational condition for safety and compliance reasons,” he said.
Most arrests were made due to lacking insurance certificates, missing headlamps and indicator lights, lack of brakes and operational brake lights among others.
“We were checking for the minimum compliance requirements in accordance to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) regulations,” Mwamburi said adding that the move was triggered by the surging numbers of motorcycle accidents being recorded on a daily basis.
He said that the situation was being fuelled by operators who were ignorant to road signs and non-observant to traffic rules.
“Sign posts have been erected and different places to guide road users but our young boys seem not to care, driving is a responsibility that must move hand in hand with good morals, respect and professionalism,” he advised.
The nabbed motorcycles were towed to the Rongai police post with operators being cautioned to comply before resuming duty.
The police chief promised not to relent until he achieves his target of ensuring a safe and accident-free Rongai further calling for cooperation form area residents.
