A group of university and colleges students from Gesima zone in Kitutu Masaba has been praised for volunteering to teach  students in public primary and secondary schools following the teachers strike.

Speaking on Thursday at Nyakongo High School when he paid students a courtesy call, Gesima education officer Robert Obiria lauded the student organisation dubbed Gesima Intellectual Society for allowing its members to teach the candidates ahead of their final exams this year.

Obiria urged more college students who are not in session to join the team and help learners especially the candidates who are expected to sit their national exams.

“I want to thank the Gesima Intellectual Society for the wonders they are doing. In fact, covering more than 15 schools in the zone is wonderful. I call upon college students who are not on session to continue helping learners as the crisis (teachers strike) is being solved,” Obiria said.

The group’s chairman Arnold Ondimu said they will continue sharing with the learners on a voluntary basis and urged parents whose children are still at home to encourage the learners to report to school.

“Learning is ongoing as usual and there is no need of keeping children at home. We are ready to help till the standoff between TSC and teachers is solved,” he said.

Obiria urged the striking teachers to desist from threatening the volunteers and urged area administration to enhance security in all institutions.
