Slum fire can easily and quickly spread if it is not put out on time. This was witnessed on Monday afternoon in Mashimoni village in Kibera.
But why did the fir spread so fast consuming more than 200 houses?
According to Linda Musyoka who witnessed the incident, most of the affected residents were busy trying to save their property instead of putting out the fire.
"Many people were in panic whereby they struggled to save their belongings not thinking of putting out the fire. I think that was the main cause for the fire to spread fast. If we could all run to put it out before spreading to other houses, we could have saved a lot," she said.
Tony Masinde said the response by fire fighters was to blame stating that they came very late even though the road to the area was constructed by the NYS.
"I think if the fire fighters could have arrived on time, they could have contained the fire before it could spread," he said.
