A middle-aged woman was on Wednesday fined Sh20,000 by a Nakuru court after she pleaded guilty to operating an unlicensed pharmacy.
The suspect, Caroline Chepkorir was accused of operating and selling medical drugs without a licence from the authorised board on October 19, at Kaptembwa estate in Nakuru County.
It’s alleged that officers were doing a drug inspection within the town and they went to the estates where they saw Chepkorir’s pharmacy.
After a close scrutiny at the premises, the court was told, they realised that she had no permit and her chemist was not registered by the Kenya Pharmacy and Poisons Board.
She was arrested and taken to Nakuru central police station where she was charged.
Appearing before Senior Principle magistrate Liz Gicheha, Chepkorir pleaded guilty and said it was her first time. She begged for forgiveness.
“It was my first time to operate the shop. I will never repeat again now that I have known it is bad, I pray that the court forgives me,” she said.
She also pleaded that she has a family which she takes care of and urged the court to be lenient since she has already learnt her mistake.
The prosecution urged the court to treat Chepkorir as a first offender since they had no previous criminal records.
The court fined her Sh20,000.
