Yatta Teachers Savings and Credit Society has opened its doors for other civil servants working in the area the Sacco has been operating in, the chairman, Mr George Mati has confirmed.

He said that civil servants were now free to join the society after the organisation received authority from the commissioner of cooperatives to go ahead with the programme.

However, Mr Mati said that military officers were barred from joining the Sacco adding that officers from cooperative development offices in the area were also barred from joining the organisation.

The chairman was speaking to the press during a meeting between banks, Saccos and other lobby groups that offer loans in Yatta on Saturday held in Yatta Social Hall, saying that he had gotten the approval of request the management committee had sought from the commissioner of cooperatives.

"We are now welcoming any other civil servant to join us following the approval of the commissioner of cooperatives," he said.

The chairman explained that cooperative officers could not be allowed to do so because they would compromise their work when they go to audit or supervise the operations of the society.

The Sacco paid dividends at rate of 11.5 per cent this year and members benefited from Sh48.6 million while last year it paid dividends at 9 per cent, and members then benefited from Sh39.4 million according to Mr Mati.
