A local non-governmental organisation has devoted resources and manpower in a programme aimed at educating youths who wish to venture into politics on the essentials of governance, democracy and the importance of preserving history.
During a seminar organised for youth party leaders affiliated to different parties from all the 47 counties by the Young Achievers East Africa (YEAH) at the Kenya National Library Services in Nakuru, the young leaders were introduced to themes related to the local political history, leadership skills, civic organisation, participation and engagement, perspectives about the community and advocacy skills.
YEAH Nakuru County co-ordinator Belinda Auma noted that their aim is to equip participants with skills that will be core in their pursuit of transforming society through active politics.
She said: “This seminar provides participants with relevant tools needed for promoting peace, spur economic growth and prosperity while upholding to the rule of law in strengthening democratic governance.”
She attributed political differences being witnessed in the country to poor leadership and lack of democracy saying that with the desired mentorship and willing hearts, the situation will change.
“Unless young leaders are taught the importance of a democratic society at an early stage, Kenya will still lag behind other stable regions in Africa and the whole world,” she stated.
Deputy governor Joseph Ruto expressed satisfaction with the initiative saying that the participants had the challenge of making a difference in their home counties.
“These are young leaders with passion and a vision for the future which will form the basis of the fate they foresee in their respective counties,” he said.
He further noted that his government was committed to upholding democracy and encouraging fresh blood in its leadership hierarchy.
“It is the wish of all stakeholders with our country’s interest at heart to secure them with the knowledge and experience needed for them to push for a secure, peaceful and prosperous nation,” Ruto added.
Nakuru County Commissioner Mohammed Birik expected to officially close the three day on Saturday.
