The World Food Day celebration has officially kicked off in Rigoma ward, Nyamira County with hundreds of youths participating in a 42 KM race to usher in the unique event.
County Executive Member in charge of Youths and Sports department John Omwanza who flagged off the race Friday morning challenged youths to seize opportunities presented by both the county and national governments to boost the economy.
Mr Omwanza observed that many youths have become ‘fence sitters’ waiting to be served by their respective county governments whenever every opportunity arises.
He said youths play an important role in economic development and should be more innovative by coming up with new ideas that can be supported by government.
“Every government provides opportunities for youths, which should be seized for their own benefits. Our youths are not doing enough to uplift their living standards because many of them sit and wait for things to happen without putting any effort. We should all be solution seekers to our problems by coming up with ideas that can be supported by the government,” he said.
Mr Omwanza said the Nyamira County government is committed to support activities initiated by youths from all the sub-counties.
“I will however applaud a some youths who have realised the treasures in the county government. They are working well with us and we cannot hesitate to help them reach their goals,” he added.
He urged youths to apply for tenders and also participate in talent search activities initiated by his docket across the county aiming at supporting youths talented in co-curricular activities.
