The Kisii County government has deployed more than 200 youths to unclog blocked drainage in all wards as the El-Nino rains continue pounding the region.
The youths have so far unblocked Prison-Storm bridge, which has been over flowing rendering the busy road impassable.
Speaking when he flagged off the youths on Tuesday, Governor James Ongwae noted that most areas within the town often experience floods.
“The youths are drawn from all our 45 wards and the exercise is extending to all the wards to ensure that the county is free of flooding. So far I am impressed with the work our youths are doing to ensure that we do not have problems draining rain water,” said Ongwae.
The event was witnessed by deputy governor Joash Maangi, county executive committee members Moses Onderi (lands, housing, physical planning and urban development), Sarah Omache (health services ), chief officers Alice Nyariki, Patrick Lumumba and Zablon Ongori, director of town management Beatrice Ochoki among other senior officers.
Ongwae said the youths will be assigned to unblock the culverts, open blocked trenches, collect garbage, clean highly degraded areas, slash overgrown vegetarian along the roadside, remove silt and mud flows on the road, make trenches and create waterways, clean markets and unblock bridges.
