Nakuru County Assembly Speaker Susan Kihika has said her role does not just end at being a speaker at the assembly.
Kihika has said as a leader, she also has a role in lighting a candle where there is darkness.
Kihika who spoke to this writer in Nakuru county on Friday, challenged Kenyans to help the elderly and physically challenged living in their neighbourhood during this festive season.
She, however, called on the National Treasury to increase it’s allocation for the monthly cash transfer programme for the elderly and orphans and vulnerable children in order to ensure all the target groups benefit.
“What I am encountering because I have concentrated quite a bit this year on the elderly and the disabled, the national government kitty for the elderly is surely not getting where it is supposed to be, or even if its heading there, the help is very minimal,” the speaker said.
She regretted that some elderly people due to poverty, even take medicines when they fall sick on empty stomachs.
The county assembly boss has embarked on a campaign to help the vulnerable in the region by offering them food and other goodies, together with other well wishers.
