Police in Rongai on Thursday morning conducted an impromptu swoop that led to the arrest of more than 10 people among them an underage boy aged 17, for drinking before the stipulated hours.

The 11am raid within Rongai town saw residents who had taken advantage of the public holiday, to have a taste of the brown bottle before time, arrested.

Thursday was announced a public holiday following Pope Francis’s visit in the country.

Confirming the arrests, area OCPD Joseph Mwamburi said they will be arraigned in court on Friday for drinking before the official time famously known as ‘Mututho time’ while the boy was handed over to his parents who picked him up at the Rongai police post.

He called on residents to always abide by the law so as to avoid clashing with the police regularly saying if everybody played their role without being monitored, the society could offer the best space for maximum productivity and smooth service delivery.

“Don’t blame the police for doing their work after they find you on the wrong side of the law, if you want to avoid such arrests, simply go as per what the law dictates,” he advised.

He also asked parents to keep an eye on their wayward teenage children who are prone to engaging in mischief now that schools have closed and a majority of them are idle.

Meanwhile, police in the area have called on residents to actively participate in community policing to help wipe out crime.
