Thirteen people with severe disabilities in Kisii have been given wheelchairs as the county joins the world to mark the day for people living with disabilities.

Others, especially those with albinism challenge, were on Thursday given capes and t-shirts to protect them against the sun.

Presiding the event, Kisii deputy governor Joash Maangi said the county government will support the challenged persons once the bill in the Assembly sailed through.

"We have been in the forefront in supporting people living with disabilities. Actually we are the only county that has observed the constitutional provision for the disabled persons," said Maangi.

He added: "There is a bill in the county assembly that is in its second stage for public participation before its assented to law. Once it goes through, it will enable us have a kitty for the people living with disabilities."

The president for people living with disabilities in the county, Kennedy Kombo, challenged the members of the county assembly to fasten so that the bill can go through for the benefit of the disadvantaged group.

On her side, the minister for social services, Malsela Otuke, blamed the national government for devolving the function but wondered why it was clinging to the funds for the people living with disabilities.

Records show there are more than 5,000 people registered with disabilities.
