The Kikuyu OCPD SSP Mutune Maweu on Friday abolished 2 boda boda Saccos from operating following claims that they encourage criminal activities. This comes after a woman was allegedly robbed and raped by a boda boda operator last night together with other unknown people at around 9 pm in Ondiri. This also comes 2 weeks after yet another incident where a man was allegedly seriously injured and robbed by unknown people who escaped using a boda boda.
Speaking from his office, the OCPD said that cases of crime had increased in the area and that most of them involved boda boda riders. He confirmed that 6 operators from 2 different Saccos in Kikuyu had already been arrested earlier for involvement in crime.
The police boss also said that boda boda managements had failed to report such individuals belonging to their Saccos hence forcing the police to take immediate action for the good of the resident from the area. He said that the 2 Saccos had been banned until further notice to pave the way for investigations.
While speaking to this writer, one of the management Saccos that had been suspended Mr. George Kimani said that as a Sacco, they would respect the suspension. He added that the police should however speed up their investigations in order to allow operators to resume their duties since most of them have families.
Kimani further said that this suspension had created room for them to vet and inspect their riders. He said that those who were arrested by the police should be charged if found guilty to enable others to operate in peace since not all of them were engaging in criminal activities. He said that he was not aware of any illegal activities by the arrested members and that if he knew, he would have evicted them and also reported the matter to the authorities.
