The Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) foundation is one of the organisations which have seriously taken up the role of parents by paying school fees for pupils as they join secondary schools.

Contrary to parents, KCB is set to cater for school fees for bright but needy students. The foundation is reported to have completed its first phase of scholarship recruitment and recorded over 2000 pupils who will benefit from the sponsorship program. However, the pupils are from different primary schools countrywide.

Students living with disabilities are also being sponsored. The organisation has set aside 40 positions for the pupils in this category.

‘‘These scholarships are set to bring financial relief to needy but bright students from less fortunate backgrounds. We had many applicants. This means children out there have a thirst for education,’’ said Jane Mwangi, the KCB director.

Parents have complained of the increment in school fees. Although the government has stepped in to address the issue, many parents still complain of not being able to raise the fees. Most of the parents now prefer the government to put a limit to every public school fee structure. They believe some heads of schools are stealing from parents through the new fee structures.
