Out of the seven constituencies in Kisumu County, the Nyando parliamentary race can authoritatively be termed as a two horse race in the run up to 2017 general election.
The constituency has seen heated political confrontation since the 2013 elections, and the shape up has seen two people stand out as the main contenders for the seat in 2017.
With the incumbent Fred Outa declaring his interest to run for the Kisumu County Senatorial position, Jared Okello who lost to Mr Outa in 2013 with a paltry 104 votes has stood out.
Mr Okello and the current Kisumu County Women Representative Rose Nyamunga are tipped to be the serious contenders for the position.
Okelo lost to Outa in the 2013 ODM nomination before defecting to Ford Kenya where he lost with a small margin, but contested the results in court, a case which is yet to be settled.
He has reaffirmed his intention to vie for the position in the Ford Kenya ticket against an ODM candidate.
"My victory was stolen in 2013 and I am ready to face the voters again in 2017 to reclaim it. I am in Ford Kenya to stay," Okelo told this writer during an interview.
Ms Nyamunga on the other hand is seen as the ODM preferred candidate for the position in a line up which will see Rosa Mbuyu replace her in the Women Representative position.
Even though Ogendo Biggy is also tipped as a fierce contestant, sources claim he is not strong enough to face Okello who has given ODM officials sleepless nights as the party cannot afford losing the seat to other parties as it happened with Kisumu West and Muhoroni where the ODM candidates were considered weak against their main competitors.
Mr Ogendo is not famous compared to Okello and Nyamunga. While Okelo has built his game on his donor funded projects of building houses to the less fortunate, widows and people living with disabilities, Nyamunga has ridden on her husband's legacy.
The husband, Opon Nyamunga served as Nyando MP between 2002 and 2007 where he lost to Outa.
The Women Representative has combined the husband's development legacy, and her loyalty to the ODM party which saw her get the party's ticket in 2013.
She is however, depending on Outa to pass over the parliamentary mantle to her as Outa focuses on Kisumu County Senatorial position which he intends to inherit from Professor Anyang Nyongo who is also eyeing the gubernatorial position.
It will however be a task to Nyamunga to clinch the parliamentary position which has never been held by a woman since its inception in the 1960s.
Another huddle is the sour relationship between Outa and Mr Nyamunga who has always accused Outa of snatching the parliamentary position from him in 2007.
