Eight people have perished in Masinga dam at Ekalakala area today February 25, 2016 after the boat they were using to cross the dam capsized.

Confirming the incident Masinga deputy county commissioner John Odengo said the boat was carrying 24 people and luggage which included four motorbikes and three-ninety kilograms sacks of maize.

"We have managed to rescue sixteen of them and we suspect the remaining are already dead as we have been around the dam for three hours in rescue mission. Six of them developed health problems and were rushed to Matuu level four hospital, the rest are in good condition," said Odengo.

According to Odengo some trained experts in swimming were there and found two bodies only which were taken to Matuu median hospital mortuary.

Odengo asked the county government to find ways to recover the remaining six bodies.

Odengo warned people from crossing the dam in overloaded boats as it is very dangerous and can cause deaths.

He encouraged beloved ones of the lost people to be strong as rescue operations are ongoing.
