Kisumu City Residents Voice Association Chairman Audi Ogada said that police who are supposed to protect the people have turned against them.

“This police station (Kondele) is becoming notorious in holding suspects for more than 24 hours in the cells and torturing them, which is against the constitution,” he said.

For the last three months, Mr Ogada said, complaints have arisen from members of the public about the station.

“We have confirmed that Kondele Police Station and smaller police posts, specifically Nyamasaria, are very notorious in torturing suspects and making them ‘disappear’ from the cells," he claimed.

“I was at the mortuary on Tuesday where we went to witness the post mortem and it was clear that the deceased was beaten by an object because there was a clot on the blood and some ribs on the right chest was also broken, which is clear testimony of torture," he said.

He added: “Suspects are innocent until proven guilty by a court of law. Police stations are not courts and very soon, I will be releasing a list of names of officers who have been adversely mentioned to be torturing suspects at the cells."
