Traders dealing in alcoholic drinks in Nakuru are set to be licensed at the beginning of the year following the unveiling of a sub-counties regulating teams.

Governor Kinuthia Mbugua said the move will help curb second generation liquor and gag unscrupulous traders.

“All traders dealing in alcoholic drinks and have been cleared by the regulating committee are supposed to be licensed in January this year following the unveiling of 11 Sub-Counties Alcoholic Drinks Regulation Administration and Review committees,” Governor Mbugua said in a statement last Tuesday.

Brewers, distributors and sellers who have adhered to the regulation standards will be licensed following the move.

The move also comes after illicit brews worth Sh2 million was last week impounded in a residential house in Kiamunyeki Estate in Nakuru.

However, Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri who led the crackdown, urged traders to be patient and await for the regulating committees to give them the go ahead.

“The regulating committees are almost done on clearing genuine traders who have complied with the measures. It is a matter of days before the licences are issued. Anyone found operating the business without clearance from the regulating committees, they will have to face the law,” Ngunjiri said during the crackdown.

Governor Mbugua added that his government is currently working with both public and private rehabs to offer intervention measures.
