More than 250 stems of bhang were uprooted and confiscated by AP officers at Embakasi village in Athi River sub county on Thursday.

The officers conducted intensive search operations in the village for three hours and uprooted the illegal plant in three different places along Embakasi streets, close to residential houses and a church.

Speaking to this writer at Champion of Christ Temple Church shortly after the operations, Mavoko assistant county commissioner David Tegutwa who led the exercise said they had responded to a tip off from members of the public.

"We have just uprooted more than 250 stems of bhang found growing along the Makadara - Embakasa Road and within people's residential areas following tip of from members of the public," said Tegutwa.

Tegutwa said the exercise was part of their ongoing wide operations as security agents to get rid of illegal drugs and illicit liquor from the entire region.

"It is very strange to find this magnitude of bhang growing in open places along streets and within residential areas as we have all witnessed, we suspect that there are people who had planted them for both commercial and personal consumption," said Tegutwa.

He said no suspect had been arrested in connection to the incident but expressed optimism in bringing to book the culprits soon.

Tegutwa said they will release their machinery to work with members of the public to find out owners of the destroyed farms and expose them to rule of law.

He was accompanied by Athi River sub county AP Commander Edward Mwangi, who called on youths from the region to shun drugs and substance abuse.

Tegutwa said bhang was a security threat in the region, arguing that majority of its consumers engage in criminal activities once they consume it.

He said all security agencies in the area were high alert 24/7 and more so within Athi River town and its environs to contain insecurity during the December festivities.

Tegutwa warned that no criminals will be spared in the area, however small the offenses they engage in might look.
