Residents of Athi River town have been urged to be careful while disposing human waste by ensuring they use toilets or proper pit latrines.
Addressing the press in Athi River town on Monday, Athi River Township MCA Michael Mutua said that would help in preventing the locals from contracting diseases.
“There is need for all of us leaders and general members of the public within Athi River town and its environs to be cautious and more responsible about our environment,” said Mutua.
Mutua said it was high time the region’s leadership seized politicising the environment and sanitation issues given that there is already reported cholera outbreak.
He said the leaders and all residents from the region and entire Machakos County in extension need to rise up in arms to ensure improved hygiene and clean sanitation.
He said the residents should be sensitised on need for good hygiene and proper sanitation in a bid of averting the situation.
Mutua noted that women and children from the slums such as Kasuitu, Bondeni, Sofia, Kisumu Ndogo, Kwa Mangeli, City Carton, JuaKali and Njuguini slums all within Athi River town were more vulnerable to getting infections since there are neither good toilets nor pit latrines in their residences.
