Police in Nakuru are investigating circumstances under which a woman’s new born baby allegedly went missing at the Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital in hours after birth.

Speaking to the press in his office on Monday, county police Commander Hassan Barua said the nurse who last handled the newborn is being held to help the police with investigations.

According to Barua, the police stepped in after the woman, Elisabeth Adhiambo, asked them to investigate the alleged loss of her baby.

“On Friday, we received complaints from a woman who claimed that her new born daughter went missing in the hands of a nurse while still at the hospital and we are investigating the matter,” he said.

He added: “We are holding the nurse who has recorded a statement. She will help us in the investigations.”

According to police reports, the baby girl is alleged to have been taken away by a nurse to be vaccinated but latter, the mother was informed that her baby was dead.

“The hospital gave the mother of the lost baby birth and death certificates but she was not allowed to view the body and that created suspicion,” said the police boss.

The hospital’s senior nursing officer, George Gathura, when contacted said they will only comment on the matter after investigations are completed.
